The 24-year-old Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacarwho broke his left wrist at the end of April at Liège-Bastogne-Liège (Belgium), confident in the full recovery of his physical form and in being able to participate in the Tour de France, even if he has to change his preparation.
“I have been training hard, doing the ‘home trainer’ and running, and this week I’m back on the road bike. I’m not as bad as I think. My pulse is getting better every day. It doesn’t hurt anymore, but I just got back to training on the road, so I’m still smart,” the Slovenian revealed to French newspaper L’Équipe.
With the goal of the Tour de France, Pogacar met his teammates in the Sierra Nevada “for a training camp at altitude”, on June 11 he will leave “to do some stages of reconnaissance” and then he will go in Sestrières (Italy) for another “concentration” and will try to make the most of it.
In addition, he will participate “in the Slovenian Championships, in the time trial and in the road test”, on June 24 and 25.
The cyclist always tries to see the positive side of his incident: “I tell myself that these kinds of setbacks are not bad at such a busy time. just on the wrist, it’s not that bad. I won’t say that it’s really a setback. It’s just a sad situation that I can take something positive from.”
Pogacar confirmed his absence from the Tour of Slovenia – June 14-18 – and assured that he is not worried, that he needs to focus “on long training sessions and split training, more than the race.”
The young cyclist laughingly admitted that he was “kinda stupid for not following doctor’s orders” because I should have waited six weeks before starting again.
This year’s Tour de France gets off to a great start, with two mountainous stages in the Basque Country, where the Slovenian declared: “The first two stages are going to be amazing, very difficult. I think I prefer that to the flat stages of the first few weeks. Less stress, you can see who’s in shape and who’s not. The first two days will be flat, a bit like two years ago (with the Fosse aux Loups and the double climb of the Mûr-de-Bretagne), when I feel really good. I love that grand tours start like this.” “The doll may not, but the legs do”assures the cyclist.
