The entity justifies the decision on “painful relegation to the Second Division and there is a desire to open a new stage for the 2023-24 project.”
Espanyol has not yet announced the name of who will replace Catoira at the head of the sports field. David Fernández was thrown out, some pools point to the former player and former member of the perica technical secretariat Urban Ortegawho currently works as ManUnited’s scouter in Spain.
Another name considered is that of Fran Garagarza, who was Eibar’s sports director between 2011 and 2021 and has been working for English side Wolverhampton since November.
Catoira is the fifth Spanish technical director under the leadership of Chen Yansheng, who took over the entity on January 19, 2016. After the departure of Óscar Perarnau in February of the same year, the position passed into the hands of Ángel Gómez (March 2016-November 2016), Jordi Lardín (December 2016 -April 2018 ), Rufete (July 2018-May 2022) and Domingo Catoira (May 2022 to present).
Catoira arrived in Espanyol earlier three seasons as technical secretary. Last year he took the position of sports director, as the highest responsible of the design of the current template, which went to Second division.
