Gino Mader added his name to the long list of cyclists killed in competition

After the sharp drop suffered by Mr. Mader in the fifth stage of Vback to switzerland the world of cycling sent all its strength to the Swiss runner and his family, but unfortunately Mader did not recover from the severe blow he suffered in the accident and lost his life this Friday.

Unfortunately, Mader joins a long list of cyclists who for various reasons lost their lives in competition, which today reminds us of some of them:

Francisco Cepeda

Francisco Cepeda from Biscay had the sad honor of being the first cyclist to die from an accident in competition at the Tour de France. This happened in the seventh episode. The man from Sopuerta fell to the ground and fractured the base of his skull in the fall, dying three days later in hospital. He ran the Tour de France four times, achieving many of his victories on Spanish soil, the last in 1992 in the 1st Tour of the Leniz Valley.

Belgian cyclist Stan Ockers died at the age of 36 after a fall at the Antwerp Six Days in 1956. A professional cyclist from 1941 to 1956, he achieved a total of 24 professional victories, since his debut in 1951 in the Terrot-Wolber range until 1956 defending the Elvé-Peugeot jersey. World road champion (1955), Ockers also had prestigious victories such as those achieved in Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Walloon Tour, in the Tour de France he finished second twice (1969, 1952) and his best classification in the Giro is sixth place.

Perhaps, Tom Simpson’s death is one of the most notorious losses in the world of cycling because of how it happened and where it happened. The British cyclist died at the age of 29 while riding the Mont Ventoux stage in the Tour de France due to heat stroke, although traces of amphetamines were found in his blood. He debuted in 1959 in the range of Saint Raphaël-R. Geminiani-Dunlop and raced until 1967 with Peugeot-Michelin-BP. He achieved 16 professional victories, became world champion on the road (1965), bronze at the Olympic Games (1956) and obtained brilliant victories in the Giro de Lombardía, Tour of Flanders or Milan-San Remo, among others.

Fabio Casartelli

Italian cyclist Fabio Casartelli lost his life in the Tour de France due to a fall sustained on the descent of the Col de Portet d’Aspet during the 15th stage of the Tour de France. He was evacuated by helicopter, but did not make it to the hospital alive. He was an Olympic champion on the road and ran from 1991 to 1995.

Manuel Sanroma

He is one of the most promising sprinters in Spanish cycling. The Almagro rider was formed in the amateur team of Seguros Soliss, before making his professional debut in June 1998 with a great performance at the Getxo Circuit and would lose his life a year later in an unfortunate fall in the second stage from at the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, after he hit his head hard with a curb. He achieved eight victories as a professional.

Saul Morales

The Madrid cyclist turned professional in 1999 in the ranks of the Fuenlabrada-Cafés Toscaf team and unfortunately he was only able to show his qualities as a professional for two years, because in 2000, while he was riding in the Tour of Argentina, he was hit by a truck that entered the middle of the race. He died at the age of 26.

Andrey Kivilev

The Kazakh rider was a professional cyclist between 1998 and 2003. He made his debut in the Festina-Lotus ranks, and later spent time with AG2R Prevoyance and Cofidis. He died from a heavy fall during the second stage of Paris-Nice. He suffered a fractured skull and ribs, went into a coma and died the next day in hospital. He achieved two victories, both in 2001 and both in France, in the Dauphiné Libére Critérium and the Route du Sud.

Wouter Weylandt

‘The Ghent Tram’, the nickname by which he was known, died at the age of 26 after suffering a fall during the third stage of the Giro d’Italia in 2011. On the descent from the Passo del Bocco he fell to the ground. He needed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but was unable to overcome serious head injuries, dying at the same scene of the fatal accident. From 2004 to 2011 he achieved a total of 12 victories, the last at the Giro d’Italia in 2010.

The rider from Vilanova i la Geltrú died on November 26, 2006 at the Kuipke Velodrome in Ghent, during the Six Days Madison race in the Belgian city. Gálvez was paired with his usual teammate, Joan Llaneras, and was involved in a fall after colliding with Belgian Dimitri De Fauw, where he hit the outer ring fence. He suffered several broken ribs which affected his heart and lungs. He died at the University Hospital of Ghent.

Antoine Demoitié

Antoine Demoitié

Belgian professional cyclist Demoitié died during Ghent-Wevelgem in 2016 after tripping and later being hit by a motorcycle. He was hospitalized with a very serious prognosis, but did not survive. He died at the age of 25. He was a professional from 2010 (Lotto-Bodysol) to 2016 (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and throughout his career he achieved one victory, in 2014 at the Tour du Finistère.

At the age of 22, the young Belgian rider died after suffering a severe fall during the third stage of the 2019 Tour of Poland. Bjorg fell off the account and hit a concrete wall. He was first treated by some fans, then by his team doctors and taken by ambulance to the hospital. He died on the operating table. He made his debut in 2018 and lost his life a year later, in the third stage of the Tour of the Fjords.

Suleiman Kangangi

Suleiman Kangangi

The Kenyan rider for Team Amani and one of the main advocates of gravel in Africa, died after suffering a serious accident while competing in the Vermont Overland Gravel Race in 2022. Kangangi tragically lost his life after crashing at high speed in the race. Michael Goolaerts. Third in the 2017 Tour of Rwanda, Kangangi went on to compete in the continental Bike Aid category.

Mr. Mader

The Swiss cyclist is the latest to join this sad list. The Swiss runner lost his life on Friday after a heavy crash that occurred in the fifth stage of the Tour of Switzerland at the age of 26. He debuted in 2019 in the Dimension Data rankings, he stood out as a great teammate in team and for leading solidarity initiatives, he achieved three victories as a professional and one of them, the last, was in the Tour of Switzerland last year.
