Sparks fly between Alonso and Hamilton and they almost touch: this is Lewis’s controversial action

Date:

Sparks flew between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso at the Canadian F1 GP, amid a battle for second place in the race, behind Verstappen. The Englishman overtook the Spaniard with a good start, but the Oviedo man stuck to the Briton’s rear wing with better speed and wanted to attack him when the ‘Safety Car’ entered the track on lap 12. There, Max, Lewis and Fernando the opportunity to make a free pit stop. At that moment Hamilton and Alonso were close to each other.

Hamilton and Alonso entered the pit lane close together. That pause is really key. A mistake can be very expensive. Lewis had the longest: 3.2 seconds. Fernando’s save was perfect: 2.3. He took 9 tenths from him in that movement, enough to defend the street position of the garages. But Hamilton came out of his pit position at all despite seeing Alonso close. He came in to defend his position and forced Alonso to brake to avoid a collision.

“I had to stop,” Alonso smartly alerted on the radio so that it was recorded in the minutes, knowing that this action would be investigated. And so it was: a few turns later, the FIA announced the controversial investigation into the actions of Lewis Hamilton. However, the FIA decided not to penalize Hamilton.

But Fernando doesn’t need the FIA to do anything. He took justice into his own hands he knew how: driving. Alonso slipped on Lewis’ DRS and on lap 22 overtook the Briton in the final corner of the Canadian track. And after that, he very well defended second position in turns 1 and 2 against the Briton, who now had DRS at his disposal to attack the man from Oviedo. Alonso attacked hard to get away and didn’t give him his DRS to go into that second position or even anything else, as Verstappen was only 2 seconds ahead of the appointment.
