Carlos Alcaraz debut this Tuesday in the tournament to Queen against the french Arthur Phils in the second turn.
Alcaraz, who missed the 2022 tournament with an elbow problem, will make his debut on the London club’s center court against the 19-year-old Frenchman, this season’s champion in Lyon and semifinalist in Marseille and Montpellier.
For the Spaniard, this will be the third official tournament he has played on grass, after Wimbledon in 2021 and 2022, where he reached the second round and the round of 16, respectively.
This week, Alcaraz is playing to reclaim the world number one ahead of Wimbledon. For this he will need to win a tournament that only Rafael Nadal (2008) and Feliciano López (2017 and 2019) have won in the history of Spanish tennis.
With 500 points shared at Queen’s, the Murcian can overtake Novak Djokovic, who currently has a 420-point lead and will not play until Wimbledon, where he has not lost since 2017.
Alcaraz arrived at Queen’s on Saturday and has already completed three training sessions, alongside Cameron Norrie, Francisco Cerúndolo and Alejandro Davidovich.
Fils got through the previous stage, where he had to win two games.
The world number 66 will be playing in the second grass-slurping tournament of his career, after qualifying in S’Hertogenbosch last week and losing in the first round to Adrian Mannarino.
Tuesday’s session at Queen’s will start with the duel between Maxime Cressy and Holger Rune, not before 12:00, and continue with Alcaraz against Fils. The day, however, may be interrupted by rain expected to fall in the capital London.
