Anett Kontaveit has announced her impending retirement

Anett Kontaveit puts down the racket. The former world number 2 announced her retirement from tennis on Tuesday due to a degenerative back injury which has prevented him from performing at a good level in recent months.

The Estonian, who stopped last season in October and took two months off in February to focus on the problem, will play his final tournament at Wimbledon, starting July 3.

“After several visits to the doctor and consultation with my medical team, I was informed that I have lumbar disc degeneration in my back“, he wrote on Instagram on Tuesday.

“It doesn’t allow you to train at full capacity or continue to compete. Therefore, it is impossible to continue at the highest level in such a highly competitive field.he added.

I am ready for new challenges after my last effort as a professional tennis player: Enjoy the game and compete as much as possible at Wimbledon.”

Kontaveit, now ranked 79th in the world, exited the Australian Open in the second round and has not played since her first round loss at Roland Garros in May.

Kontaveit won four titles and reached the WTA Finals in the 2021 season which took her to the eliteand became number two in the world in September at the US Open, where she lost to Serena Williams in the second round.
