A 16-year-old girl has been killed in a shooting at her school in southern Brazil. Another student was seriously injured. The shooter, who was himself a student at Londrina, was arrested.
According to Brazilian media reports, he is 21 years old. The former student showed up at primary and secondary school and asked for his certificates, authorities said. After entering the building, he pulled out a gun and started firing. A 16-year-old was killed and another student was seriously injured. The injured man has been taken to hospital and is currently in critical condition.

According to the governor of the stricken state, a teacher intervened and “an even worse tragedy could be avoided”. He, like the shooter, has already been arrested. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva reacted to the attack with “sadness and outrage”. “Another young life taken by hatred and violence,” he wrote on Twitter. “We can no longer tolerate this hatred and violence in our schools and in our society,” he added.
attacks increase
Gun attacks used to be rare in Brazil, but are now on the rise. In March, a teacher was killed in a knife attack and a 13-year-old suspect was arrested. In April, an attacker broke into a kindergarten in the town of Blumenau and killed four children with an axe. The incidents caused great horror in the country. The government then announced measures to increase safety in schools. The deadliest shooting in Brazilian history occurred in 2011, when a man shot and killed 12 children and himself at his former school.
