The animal that got into mischief in Maria Alm (Salzburg) at the end of May can be “removed” on site from next Tuesday.
Two mauled goats and ten dead sheep in late May and early June in the Maria Alm region are now having the first consequences. The wolf responsible for the cracks will be released next Tuesday to be shot. The necessary regulations will be ready today, after which a review period of one week should start. Only then can you hunt.
“We are reacting quickly in the realm of the possible,” said the new State Secretary Marlene Svazek (FPÖ). Because the system has some weaknesses for them. First the DNA has to be proven, then the recipe has to be made and the deadlines met. By then, the wolf will likely have long since left. However, it can only be shot within 10 kilometers of the “crime scene”.
However: if the same wolf kills other animals outside this radius, the radius will be extended without new regulation. “All in all, the solution is not ideal. Our goal is clear, to create wolf-free zones,” says Svazek. But that won’t happen again this year. In such a zone, any wolf can be “caught”.
