Fire Volcano Active – Hundreds of people in Guatemala evacuated

Date:

In Guatemala, hundreds of people have been brought to safety because of a volcanic eruption. The civil protection of the middle -American country spoke on Thursday (local time) of more than 500 evacuated.

Volcán de Fuego (Feuervulkan), 35 kilometers from the capital Guatemala City, started to expel smoke and ashes. The cloud of smoke reached a height of more than 7000 meters. The Volcán de Fuego is considered the most active volcano in Central America.

In 2018, at least 215 people were killed in an outbreak of the 3763 meter -high volcano and were reported as missing. The residents of the region therefore did not hesitate to follow the call for evacuation on Thursday.

The National Institute for Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology of the country warned of dangerous streams – so -driven pyroclastic streams – which could race at high speed through the slopes of the volcano.

Last broke out in March
The Volcán de Fuego broke out for the last time on March 9 (see video above). More than 30,000 people who live near the volcano were brought to safety at the time.

Guatemala is located on the SO -Called Pacific Fire Ring. Time and again there are earthquakes and volcanic activity.
