Rescue blocked – woman in mortal danger – activists risk punishment

Date:

Berlin police are investigating two “last generation” climate activists who had hindered rescue efforts. As reported, members of the group glued themselves to a street on Monday and slowed down the fire service, which had been called to a victim of an accident.

A police spokesman said Tuesday that a 63-year-old and a 59-year-old are under investigation for failure to provide assistance or the disability of those providing assistance.

According to him, the activists would have stuck themselves on a portal of signs on the A100 at various points. This involved not only the two men, but several people. The protest caused traffic congestion. A fire rescue vehicle, en route from a blue-light Charlottenburg station to a rescue operation in the Wilmersdorf district, got into one of them.

Cyclist is still in mortal danger
The vehicle had to recover a seriously injured cyclist who had collided with a cement mixer and became trapped under the heavy vehicle. The 44-year-old is still in life-threatening condition on Tuesday. The driver involved in the accident was also seriously injured. He was attacked with a knife by a previously unknown person as he got out of the vehicle immediately after the collision.

Major problems at the fire service
In an interview with “FOCUS Online”, the Berlin fire brigade is angry about the climate activists. “It is problematic that activists continue to claim that they are not responsible for the fact that an emergency lane is not formed in a traffic jam, but that the drivers are responsible,” said spokesman Rolf Erbe. Indeed, many motorists would hardly leave room for an emergency lane, but without the blockade the traffic jam would not have arisen.

“There were several rescue workers on site who have been doing this work for 35 years and are used to it. But to see a woman seriously injured in such a situation under a cement mixer and not being able to help, that can really sink in,” said Erbe. The emergency services would now be given psychological care.

“Last generation” very active
The “Last Generation” group has already explained that the traffic jam may be due to them. “We sincerely hope that her (cyclist, note) health has not deteriorated due to the delay,” said spokeswoman Carla Hinrichs. Ensuring the safety of all participating people is “the top priority in all our protests”.

The “Last Generation” is also known, among other things, for pasting campaigns in the streets of Vienna and for attacks on paintings. The Berlin police have now received about 730 proceedings about the ongoing actions of climate activists, but not only from this group. Some of them were sentenced to lesser fines.
