Deputy Secretary General and Speaker for ERC, Marta Vilaltais “convinced” that Catalonia could organize the Winter Olympics “in full” on its ownif this is the case the negotiations with Aragon and the Spanish Olympic Committee for a joint candidacy shipwreck.
Aragonese president Javier Lambán said Monday that if the Generalitat presents to the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) a candidacy for the Catalan Pyrenees to host the Winter Olympics in 2030, Aragón will also present its own proposal , but it is not “on the edge”, like the Catalan, but “it will align with the interests of the Pyrenees as a whole”.
Along these lines, the Catalan minister of the Presidency Laura Vilagrà also pointed out on Sunday that the Generalitat of Catalonia does not eliminate the presentation of that candidacy alone, because of what she described as “obstacles” by the Aragonese executive .
At a press conference at ERC headquarters, Vilalta laments Lambán’s “threats”, “blackmail” and “weird ideas” “disrespect for Catalan institutions”, and made it clear that the ERC works to “have a good candidacy for the Games and this is a project that brings opportunities”.
Although he pointed out that there was still time for negotiations — the COE set the limit on May 20 — and that the Government, COE, Catalonia and Aragón should be allowed to “talk” about this joint candidacy, Vilalta stressed about the idea of a single candidacy: “We are convinced that Catalonia can fully organize the Games, 100%, as a country”.
The Republican leader stressed that Catalonia has “infrastructures, territories” and has “possibilities”, so it can be done “perfectly”, while also awaiting the citizen consultation to be held in July in the regions which will host Olympic events.
