The Russian figure skater’s doping case Kamila Valeva will finally be resolved after hearing dates were set this Thursday at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which will be held between September 26 and 29 and which overshadowed last year’s Beijing Olympic Games.
The hearing may clarify who won the Beijing team figure skating competition. Russia finished first with Valieva on her team, ahead of the United States, but no medals were awarded.
Valieva’s positive for a banned heart drug in December 2021 was revealed at the Beijing Olympics a few weeks later. Valieva was 15 years old at the time and her case raised concerns about the training and treatment of teenage figure skaters in Russia. She was allowed to skate in the women’s competition, but placed fourth after a routine full of mistakes.
The World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Skating Union appealed to CAS after a Russian court found Valieva innocent.
WADA is seeking a four-year suspension and disqualification from the Olympic Games. Russia’s national anti-doping agency also joined the case by filing an appeal, but indicated that a reprimand would be sufficient, a verdict that would leave Valieva and the Russian team as Olympic gold medalists.
