The owners of Chelsea bought a French elite club

Date:

The American consortium BlueCo, which bought Chelsea in May 2022, has reached an agreement to become a shareholder of Racing Club de Strasbourg, a team that plays in Ligue 1.

Through the deal, announced today by Chelsea, BlueCo will invest in the first men’s and women’s teams and in Strasbourg’s academywhile Marc Keller will remain president, a position he has held since 2012, when the club was in danger of liquidation.

Since then, Strasbourg has been promoted to Ligue 1 from the third category and participated in it for the last six seasons, eventually finishing in 15th place. Furthermore, the Alsatian club won the French League Cup in 2019.

“This is an important day for Racing. It’s something that my shareholder friends and I have been thinking about for the past two years,” Keller said in a statement.

“We have built a club that is healthy at all levels and well managed. Although there is no financial need, we know that we have reached the ceiling of our model”, added Koller. “If we want to continue driving the Career and project it into a new dimension, we need to be accompanied by a stable structure capable of supporting our development and our ambition”.

100% for 75 million euros

Details of the stake have not yet been released, but The Guardian reports that the BlueCo consortium will hold almost 100% ownership after paying €75m.

Chelsea was acquired in May 2022 by an investment group led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital after what Roman Abramovich was forced to sell the Premier League club following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a result of his links to Vladimir Putin.

“BlueCo plans to make an active contribution to the development of the model implemented by Marc Keller,” the consortium said. “First, financially, by providing capital that will allow investment in the men’s and women’s first teams, the academy and the whole club.”

Fifth Ligue 1 club in American hands

Strasbourg became the fifth Ligue 1 club to pass into American hands after Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse and newly promoted Le Havre.
