“I am very happy that I signed my contract with Athletic. Ultimately this is a place where I want to be. I am proud to defend this shield and this shirt, to represent a club with values that I identify with, with great fans and an identity and philosophy that is unique in the world. I came with a great desire to work, with a great desire to contribute”
This is what David Aznar, the new women’s Athletic coach, declared yesterday in Ibaigane after signing his signature with the company of president Jon Uriarte. The former rojiblanco coach arrived in Bilbao backed by his career on the Real Madrid bench. The man from Toledo replaces Iraia Iturregi, who continues to serve as second in Basconia, the third subsidiary of the rojiblanco men.
“It is a great responsibility and also a source of pleasure to belong to a club of this level, of this history, to live every day in Lezama and do my part to improve and develop this project,” said the new rojiblanco mister.
A big challenge
Aznar clarified that “the challenge is that I go to a club that is dedicated to women’s football, that has shown it for many years of history, that believes in it and wants to continue growing. I share the identity and philosophy of this club and see I have myself fully represented here”.
Regarding his team, the new Athletic coach pointed out that “I see a lot of talent in the team and a sense of belonging. Two difficult things to find in clubs. Athletic is a mirror to look into.”
Regarding the competition in the Women’s League, Aznar pointed out that “it is against the giants. We know what identity is, but we need to strengthen it. One of Athletic’s great values is its philosophy, which makes it a unique club in the world, very special. I want to experience it myself and try to keep the project moving forward. It is a great motivation to be in this project”.
Amaia Peña and Marta Unzué renewed
Athletic also became official yesterday afternoon, first the agreement to renew Amaia Peña and a few hours later the one related to Marta Unzué. The 24-year-old rojiblanca goalkeeper will continue to be associated with the discipline of the rojiblanco club until June 30, 2025. The previous contract for the goalkeeper, which lasted just nine games, ended this month.
The 34-year-old player from Navarra, who is in the middle of a recovery period from surgery on his right knee, also extended his contract until 2024. Last season he played 24 games until the time of his injury.
