Patrick Vieira will not be without the team for more than three months. Sacked on March 17 by Crystal Palace, the French coach returned to his country to continue his coaching career ever since Strasbourg, 15th last season in Ligue 1, will announce his signing in the next few hours.
At 47 years old, Vieira will sign a three-year contract that is due to take effect tomorrow, Sunday, and will make him the successor to Frederic Antonettiwho agreed to leave with the board afterwards BlueCo, the consortium that owns Chelsea, agreed on June 22 to buy most of the shares of the French club.
Vieira began his coaching career after hanging up his boots at Manchester City in 2011 and took charge of the club’s elite ‘citizen’ development team in 2013.
In 2015 he became manager of MLS side New York City FC, before returning to Europe three years later with Ligue 1 side Nice.
Vieira led the French team to seventh place at the end of his first season, but was sacked in December 2020 after poor results.
Return to the Premier as a coach
In July 2021, a decade after retiring from English football’s top flight, Vieira returned to the Premier League as Palace manager, replacing Roy Hodgson.
He guided the Eagles to a 12th-place finish in his first season and also to the FA Cup semi-finals.
Arsenal idol as a player
As a player, after going through Cannes and Milan, Vieira became an idol for Arsenal fans because, in his nine years as a ‘gunner’ (1996 to 2005), he won the Premier League three times, four FA Cups and three Community shields. He then went through Juventus, Inter and Manchester City.
