Spanish tennis player Garbiñe Muguruza, 29, was recognized this Wednesday in Madrid with the highest honor in Spanish sport, the gold medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit (ROMD).
This recognition reflects her brilliant career so far, winning Roland Garros in 2016, Wimbledon in 2017 and the WTA Finals in 2021. Seven singles titles and five in the doubles category.
“I am very excited about this recognition. You don’t think until this kind of thing happens, and it’s very proud to play, having achieved so much success,” he said at the event.
“I am very excited to be here, at the Chamartín Tennis Club, because I played here when I was a child, all the tournaments, I went to train, it’s full of love,” said Garbiñe, 29.
Victor Francos, president of the Higher Sports Council (CSD), had the opportunity to present the said award to the tennis player and did not hide his satisfaction: “It is very difficult to get where you have come. There are many tennis players who, trying hard and having a professional career, have not been able to win any Grand Slam.
The former number one, currently ranked 207th in the world, stepped away from the courts in February, after his first-round defeat in Lyon, due to the need to recover physically and mentally.
francs He appreciated his attitude of knowing how to stop and enjoy the moments of his family, but also confirmed his desire to see him again on the pitch: “You also have to know how to stop. You know how to stop. You gave lessons in fighting, competing, winning and quitting. What happens is that I am the President of the Higher Sports Council and I have to ask you to come back”.
There is no date for this Garbine Muguruzawho assured that “at the moment I don’t know when I will come back. I was a little brave to stop, something that means a lot to me and I’m happy. I don’t have a return date, but this year definitely not because I want to be with my family. This is not a final goodbye, but a sabbatical year”.
It’s okay, “I don’t miss the competition, I do miss winning. I want to rest. I keep playing and going to the gym, I don’t want to lose shape. My day to day now is very relaxed, knowing that I don’t have to compete.”
But tennis still pulls a lot: “I still have to win in Australia, an Olympic medal, win the Federation Cup. There are so many trophies to lift…”
