With the Ryder Cup three months from nowhe United States captain Zach Johnsontrying to make sure that any link in between LIV Golf and other circuits, including PGA Tourdon’t get in the way of putting together a winning list.
Johnson said Wednesday that he and the Ryder Cup committee have decided how they want to deal with the fraudulent landscape that LIV has created in the golf world, and that they are sticking to their guns.
“What’s happening in professional golf from a competitive, competition level, is the PGA Tour, right?” Johnson said. “It’s not the PGA of America. So American people who play on tours other than the PGA Tour, they can play, I mean, technically the Latin Tour or the Asian Tour or wherever. Most of the time they go . member of the PGA of America for a variety of reasons,” he added.
While he didn’t outright say that LIV Golf members are welcome on Team USA, Johnson made it clear that nothing is stopping them from earning a spot on the team.
“Players who leave the PGA Tour to compete on the LIV Tour remain members of the PGA of America, so they can continue to earn points,” Johnson said. “Consequently, they can play in the PGA Championship, because that is what the PGA of America organizes. Obviously, technically, they can still be part of Team USA,” he said.
Brooks Koepka, 12th in the Official World Golf Ranking and winner of the PGA Championship last May after tying for second at the Masters, he was among those competing on the LIV circuit that Johnson was keeping an eye on.
“Brooks was third on the list. The top six took a spot after FedEx BMW,” Johnson said. “I don’t know the date. More or less mid-August in Chicago. So after that Sunday the top six are confirmed, and then we’ll say our six ‘wild cards’. The following week is the Tour Championship. The Tuesday after the Tour Championship is when I’ll announce the picks. Brooks has led the way because of how well he’s played in the Masters and the PGA Championship. He has a great chance to make the team, to win the position, that’s awesome” said Johnson.
The Ryder Cup will be held in Rome from September 29 to October 1.
