In Mundo Deportivo we had access to the new format of Champions League which will begin at the end of next season. A new champion in the number of teams and in the format of the competition.
The first great novelty is that the number of teams that have participated so far from the group stage has increased by 4, from the current 32 to 36 in the future. Four places to be awarded by UEFA following different award criteria in national leagues. Also the european league and the Conference League rise to this number of teams.
The second big novelty is in the format of the competition where the group stage will be replaced by a league stage with 36 clubs. Clubs will no longer play three opponents twice, home and away, but face eight different clubs in Champions League and Europa League. It was against six in Conference League. Half of each club’s matches will be played at home and the other half away.
All results are counted in a ranking: 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss. The rivals, and which games will be played at home and which will be drawn. The 36 clubs will be divided into four groups of nine clubs. Naa Champions the first group will include the champion of the competition and the first eight clubs in the classification according to the club coefficient. Naa european league, the first group includes the first nine clubs in the ranking according to the coefficient. And finally to Conference League each club will play against six rivals and where the 36 clubs will be divided into six groups of six clubs based on their individual coefficient established at the beginning of the season. Six paired groups 1-2, 3-4 and 5-6 where each club will face its group rivals and the opponent.
An intermediate round before the round of 16
The third great novelty to Champions It takes the form of an intermediate round at the end of the league and the beginning of the round of 16. The first eight will go directly to the round of 16. Those classified from 9 to 16 will face the clubs classified from 17 to 24 in the previous Champions League tie. The second leg is always in the stadiums of those ranked between 9 and 16. From there it will return to the traditional format of round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. There will also be a knockout round before the round of 16 Europe and Conference Leagueas is currently the case when they finish their group stages.
The dates will remain the same. Tuesday and Wednesday for Champions and on Thursday for Europe and Conference League. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, there will be two time slots which will be 18:45 and 21:00. Additional slot at 4:30 pm can be used for matches on Europa League and Conference when there is a two-hour difference in the country of origin.
