A Czech coach carrying 35 passengers heading south caught fire on the southeastern tangent of Vienna on Tuesday evening. The driver acted quickly and managed to contain the flames with a powder extinguisher. No one was injured.
“One of the tires blocked, then the rubber and the wheel arch caught fire,” said a spokesman for the professional fire brigade. The driver stopped the vehicle shortly after the Hirschstettner tunnel and apparently immediately knew what to do. He extinguished the flames with a powder extinguisher.
The fire service was alerted around 11:20 p.m. and left for the A23 with six vehicles and 22 emergency services. The fire was quickly and permanently extinguished. All passengers were safely escorted off the modern coach and off the A23. The emergency services then took care of the travelers until a replacement bus arrived and the journey could continue.
