the legend of kenyan Eliud Kipchoge will participate in Berlin marathon on September 24, where he set a new world record in 2022, his team announced Thursday. Kipchoge, who will seek an unprecedented third Olympic marathon title in Paris in 2024 after achievements in 2016 and 2021, is looking for a reaction after suffering a rare defeat at the Boston Marathon in April, when he finished sixth.
“On the way to the Olympic Games in Paris, I am happy to return to the Berlin marathon, which for me is the perfect preparation. I have great memories there and I can’t wait to run through the streets of Berlin again,” the 38-year-old said, quoted in a statement from his team.
Kipchoge hopes to win for the fifth time in Berlin (after 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022), on a flat and fast course where he has often broken two world records (2h01:39 in 2018 and then 2h01:09 in 2022). The Olympic marathon in Paris will be eventful.
In his quest for records, the Kenyan announced that he wanted to win all six “major” marathons. After Berlin, London, Chicago and Tokyo, he still misses Boston and New York, the latter scheduled for November, but this year he prefers Berlin. “The priority now is to focus on the Olympic Games and win for the third time. Other challenges will come later.”Kipchoge was closed.
