the Tunisian Ounce Jabeurwho lost the third Grand Slam final of his career on Saturday, said it was the “worst defeat” of his career and that it hurt because he knew it was “so close”.
“I have lost two finals and this is the third. I think I was doing everything right and it happened to me like the year before. It hurts because you feel so close to something you want and now you have to go back to square one.” said the Tunisian in a press conference.
Jabeur, after losing the 2022 Wimbledon final against Elena Rybakina and of the US Open 2022 against Iga Swiatekgive up straight sets with Marketa Vondrousova.
“I haven’t played well. There are a lot of things I should have done better. Not serving well didn’t help and Marketa returned every ball. Even when she served well, she was there to return . My backhand has’ T come up either, and playing against a woman didn’t help either. Very different tennis player from my last rounds. I haven’t played well, but that doesn’t detract from Marketa’s match.”
Vondrousova explained that after the game Kim Clijsters who had lost his first four Grand Slam finals, went to the locker room to console him.
“She’s a huge inspiration to me. I grew up watching her quite a bit and that she took the trouble to give me advice and hug me, I’ll always remember that. Priceless.”
