Bayern Munich today announced the arrival of Austrian Christoph Freund as the new sports director being replaced Hasan Salihamidzic, was dismissed in May along with the CEO Oliver Kahnafter a turbulent season despite an eleventh consecutive Bundesliga victory for the Bavarian club.
Freund, 46, is eight, since July 2015, as sports director of Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg and he will assume his new position on September 1, at the same time as the end of the transfer market, as Bayern detailed in its statement.
“I am very happy to be able to (…) do everything possible so that this club continues to enjoy the same sporting successes, to play with international elites and delight their fans with attractive football”, said Freund.
“We are convinced that he is the right person to strengthen the team in the future, together with To Thomas Tuchel’s coaching staff and technical director Marco Neppe”ensured for his part the president of the board of directors of Bayern, Jan-Christian Dreesen, appointed CEO of the club immediately after the dismissal of Kahn.
Dismissed on the last day of the Bundesliga
Salihamidzic, who has served as sports director since 2017, and Kahn is was dismissed on May 27 while playing the last day of the Bundesliga. Bayern beat Colonia 1-2 and knocked Borussia Dortmund off the lead, drawing at home against Mainz (2-2) as they had everything in their favor to take the title.
Despite being unexpectedly crowned champions, Bayern had a very disappointing season as usual eliminated in the quarterfinals both in the Champions League, by Manchester City, and in the DFB Pokal by Firburg.
