Record tickets but worry about sales on New Zealand: 1 million 300 thousand tickets were sold for world organized in Oceania, according to the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantinowhile appealing to New Zealanders to “seize the moment”.
“It’s not too late, we need you, come and watch the games,” Infantino told New Zealand reporters in Auckland on Wednesday at the tournament’s launch press conference. “We still have tickets available for most matches, but don’t wait until the last minute,” said Fatma Samoura, secretary general of the international federation.
Kick off is on Thursday with the New Zealand-Norway match in Auckland, the same day Australia take on Ireland in Sydney in front of a sold-out crowd of 80,000. In contrast, the Ferns’ opener against Norway at Eden Park in Auckland has yet to sell out.
New Zealand will host 29 games in total, including all group stage matches of two-time defending champions USA. But in recent days, Jane Patterson, the head of World Cup operations, said the total number of entries sold for matches in the country was just over 320,000, less than a quarter of the total announced on Wednesday by FIFA.
“We know Kiwis are late to buy tickets,” said Fatma Samoura. “The only message I want to send here is to seize the moment, to be proud of what you have achieved here in New Zealand, in Australia,” Infantino told reporters. “This is a moment that all football fans in New Zealand must seize. It is already the most watched women’s sporting event,” continued Fatma Samoura. “But I want to say to the New Zealand fans that the show they will see, not just their team, will be unique. When they go to see a game for the first time, they will see that it is fantastic,” added Infantino.
