World Cup controversy over an exit criteria that could favor Van der Poel

Date:

The main corridors of Mountain bike of the world, almost all of them in fact, issued a harsh statement against the International Cycling Union (UCI) by this organization’s decision to apply a criterion different from that predicted will be generated in the starting grid of international cross country racewhich is celebrated this Saturday in Scotland.

The statement, presented by the representatives of the riders, responded to the decision of the UCI, announced shortly before, to consider the world ranking of other disciplines to form the starting grid and not only of the mountain bike .

So, the main beneficiary is the road and cyclocross world champion, the Dutch Mathieu Van der Poel -besides british Thomas Pidcock and the Slovakian Peter Sagan- who went from starting in the last positions -according to the ranking of the discipline- to doing it near the head, taking into account this new rule.

The statement given by the brokerss accuses the UCI of “changing the rules” hours before the start of a race, and stressed that they feel “disappointed and disappointed” in a situation that could influence not only this afternoon’s race but qualification for the next Olympic Games.

The text, signed among others by the number one mountain biker, the Swiss Nino Schurter, who is looking for his eleventh World Cup. “It’s great to have big names from different disciplines in our sport and we look forward to racing against them, but we’re really not happy with how the UCI is treating our discipline by changing the rules about the starting position” of the event.

“The issue now is not whether the rule applied is fair, unfair or adequate, but rather the concern is how and when the UCI applied and enforced this ruleand “and the consequences for individual riders and teams whose positions at the Olympic Games are likely to be affected.”

They thought that “the UCI contradicts itself in applying the rule” and they emphasize that “the hours before the start of the World Championship are not the time to selectively look for rules” where “we express our deep disappointment and disappointment in this situation caused by the UCI,” the statement concluded.
