The end of this season will bring us an extraordinary event for Spanish football. And this is happening because next season our competition will have for the first time a team in the third club competition in Europe, the Conference League. The competition that on the coming May 25 is contending in its first final at Tirana Stadium.
Now it remains to be seen who will occupy this area for the next 2022-2023 season. Put that, as we explained in this newspaper, is conditioned on the position that Betis finally occupies in its capacity as champion of the Copa del Rey, allowing it to opt for a position in the Europa League. If the Betis continue in European positions like they are today and it seems very unlikely that this will not be the case, this position in the Conference will be occupied seventh in the league. Position currently occupied by Villarreal. The position he had already occupied last season but that, by winning the Europa League and earning a place in the Champions League, left Spain without a team in this third competition.
In today’s almost impossible scenario alone, with Betis coming out of the European positions, it’s the sixth League to go to the Conference League.
Whoever the team will finally attend, will not make it directly to the group stage but will have to pass a preliminary round scheduled for mid-August. The first leg on the 18th and the second leg on the 25th. If it does win, it will go to the group stage starting on Thursday, September 8th
Yesterday, Friday, the deadline for clubs to register with UEFA ended
Exactly yesterday, Friday, May 13, the deadline for registration with UEFA ended for all clubs with options to play in any of the club’s competitions for the next 2022-2023 season.
Registration with two stages
All who have done so, must submit an admission criteria form from each club that has qualified or may have qualified for the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. All of these forms are of a temporary nature pending the end of the season when positions for the three club competitions are determined.
The second stage has a deadline of June 1. At that time, the national associations, in this case, the Spanish Football Federation, must send an official registration form to the competition in which all clubs qualify for three club competitions must be included.
In addition, national associations that are unable to submit their league and cup results to the country before May 13 must submit before June 1 to confirm which clubs qualify for the aforementioned competitions. This is not the case in our country where both tournaments are already defined.
