Swiatek was playing with fire on Rybakina and Pegula’s bye day in Cincinnati

Iga Swiatek had to use resources to earn her ticket to the WTA Premier 1000 quarterfinals in Cincinnati. The world number one came back to beat China’s Qinwen Zheng 3-6, 6-1 and 6-1 and play a pass in Friday’s semifinals against Czech Marketa Vondrousova.

Kazakh Elena Rybakina suffered a worse fateretired due to injury against Italian Jasmine Paolini, and Jessica Pegularecent champion in Montreal.

Pegula fell 6-4, 6-0 against Czech Marie Bouzkova, world number 35.

Greek María Sakkari, number 8 in the ranking, was also eliminated, beaten 6-3, 2-6 and 6-3 by Czech Karolina Muchovanumber 17 in the world.
