The Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), will not compete in the Tour of Spain which starts next Saturday in Barcelona as he has not yet fully recovered from a knee injury sustained in a fall he suffered in the Tour de France.
As commented on Radio La Red the doctor from Carapaz, José Reinhart, Cyclist Carchense continues to recover from his knee injurybut the recovery process has been slower than expected.
“On the medical side, Richard has been discharged. The knee is very good but along the way he developed muscle discomfort and his recovery was somewhat delayed”, commented the doctor.
Reinhart removed all rumors about a hypothetical Carapaz participation in the Vuelta.
“We measure Richard’s work every day, but he will not be able to participate in the Tour of Spain. The requirement was made, the indicated steps were followed, but it did not come. At the beginning we were hoping that it would make it into the competition, but it didn’t. We talked to him, his coach and they accepted the recommendation,” he said.
Reinhart assured that the presence of the ‘Locomotive’ in Spain has always been considered a complicated situation, due to the high risk factor for the return.
“If he participates in La Vuelta, he will not answer 100%. You may also suffer muscle damage. The best thing is that he stops and he recovers well enough to get back on the streets”.
Finally, the cyclist’s doctor detailed the reasons why recovery took longer than expected.
“His problem was inflammation of the tendon and the process, which was very good, took a few more days.”.
