The Unified Association of Civil Guards (AUGC) this Monday criticized the “dishonorable” decision of the Ministry of the Interior of exclude them “for the first time in history” from the safety of the Cycling Tour of Spain stages in the Principality of Andorrawhose work would fall to the Mossos d’Esquadra.
The AUGC sent a letter to the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, in which expresses “his dismay” at this “dishonorable” decision, as well as “his deep concern and confusion”according to the association in a statement.
So they denounced in their letter that the Government relegated them from this “historic role”. with the argument that the first four episodes take place in Catalonia and two of them in the Principality of Andorraso security is provided to the Generalitat Police.
“At AUGC we do not understand this decision“, because the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard ensures the road safety device at the Vuelta Ciclista a España in previous editions.
“Even”, added the AUGC, in the stages held “beyond our borders, we maintain cooperation services with the police forces of other countries, as happened in Utrecht in 2022, Nimes in 2017 or Lisbon in 2009”.
At this point, considered a “painful disobedience” that the Ministry of the Interior has decided to give the security of the Tour of Andorra to the Mossos d’Esquadra.
“We cannot allow the body -the Civil Guard- to be used as a bargaining chip to reach agreements and political negotiations and in this way we are belittled in our powers and duties”, concluded the letter sent by the AUGC to Grande-Marlaska.
