Corinthians earned a spot in the semifinals of South American Cup this Tuesday when they won at home in a penalty shootout 2-3 at students of La Platawho in regulation time beat the Brazilian team 1-0 and thus leveled the tie.
Experienced goalkeeper Cássio had a good night and the albinegra team from Sao Paulo was also fortunate to receive, between regulation time and the penalty shootout, six shots that exploded over the crossbar.
El Pincha soon got the victory, in minute 1 through Mauro Méndez. The result left the pulse of the quarterfinals in a draw, because eight days before Corinthians prevailed with the minimum in their stadium.
Estudiantes took advantage of the momentum from the goal and kept intense pressure on Corinthians, who failed to cross the middle of the field for much of the first half. The goalkeeper Cássio has to work hard to avoid another drop.
The scenario was repeated in the second half, where Eduardo Domínguez’s students pressed on Timao’s place, led by the former coach and former coach of Real Madrid, Vanderlei Luxemburgo.
Despite the attacks, Estudiantes failed to increase the difference. Finally, fatigue set in and the Corinthians tried to take advantage of the change in pace to launch a counter-offensive, which also did not affect the final result.
