A few days after controversial elections in the Central African state of Gabon, soldiers say they have overthrown the government of President Ali Bongo.
A group of senior officers appeared on Gabon’s television 24 on Wednesday and said they had seized power in the African country. The recent elections were not credible and the result was annulled. State institutions have been dissolved and borders are closed until further notice.
The government was not immediately available for comment. Only a short time before, the Election Commission had declared Bongo the winner of the presidential election. Bongo received 64.27 percent of the vote in Saturday’s vote. Bongo’s family has ruled the oil-rich country of 2.3 million people for 56 years. For the first time, the president, the parliament and the municipal level were elected simultaneously.
