The Panamanian international defender Gilberto Hernandez was shot by unknown persons in the Panamanian town of Colón, on the country’s Caribbean coast, police announced Monday, arresting a suspect. The 26-year-old soccer player was riddled with bullets on Sunday by unknown assailants who fired from a car, police said. Many more people were injured in this city, where accounts are often settled between drug traffickers.
Gilberto Hernández played for Club Atlético Independiente, where he won two national championships. The Panamanian coach, the Spanish-Danish Thomas Christiensen, called him up twice, specifically against Argentina.
“Police detained an individual” suspected of being involved in this murder, said Deputy Commissioner Hermogenes Argüelles, police chief for the Colón region, without giving further details.
