The FIA Formula E champion, Nyck de Vrieswill replace Williams regular driver Alex Albon in early training on Friday for this weekend’s Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, the team said.
27-year-old Dutchman Nyck de Vries will join the team following one of two mandatory young driver sessions this season and help prepare the team to work ahead of Qualifying and the Grand Prix. Albon will return to FW44 from LIbres 2.
De Vries is also a reserve for Mercedes, which provides Williams with the engines. Although he has already tested for Mercedes, Friday’s session was his first official start in a Formula One car on a Grand Prix weekend.
“First of all, I want to thank Williams for the opportunity to dive into FP1. It was great for me to get to know the team and drive an FW44, and also be on track for a Formula One weekend.” Dutchman who won the Formula 2 title in 2019 before another current Williams driver, Nicolas Latifi.

De Vries just won the second of two Formula E races in Berlin and rose to sixth position in the championship after his second victory of the season and the first since the premiere in Saudi Arabia, a competition led by his colleague Mercedes Stoffel Vandoorne.
