The regional sports gala this afternoon in Cartagena (El Batel Auditorium, 8:00 pm) brings together the Murcian tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, the athlete of Muleño Mohamed Katir and the motorcyclist from Mazarrón Pedro Acosta, who will receive the prize for best Murcian athlete in 2021. The event was supposed to take place at the Teatro Circo de Murcia last Christmas, but it was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and is finally being celebrated in the port city today.

The event is organized by the Autonomous Community and the Sports Press Association of the Region of Murcia (APDRM) in collaboration with GESA Mediación, CaixaBank, Primafrio and El Corte Inglés. Alcaraz, Katir and Acosta were the best athletes on earth in a magical 2021, in which the three youngsters became internationally known in their respective sports. Today they are already absolute references in tennis, athletics and world motorcycling.

Alcaraz is already the number 6 in the world and this week he will complete his preparation for Roland Garros in Villena, where he will start with the Serb Novak Djokovic as favorite for the title. Katir has been training at altitude for months and is preparing in the best way for the double challenge that will be presented to him this summer: winning a medal at the European Championships and the World Championships in outdoor athletics. Finally, Acosta makes a difficult debut in Moto2 and crashed in the last four races, but despite this he is one of the most promising riders in the world and gains followers in every Grand Prix.

In addition, the award for the best athlete goes to the Murcian referee María Dolores Martínez Madrona, who was named the best referee in the country during the 20-21 season by the Royal Spanish Football Federation. Martínez Madrona, who directed the final of the Copa de la Reina, is also a member of the board of directors of the RFEF.

Meanwhile, Rafael Alcázar, coach of the national ParaTaekwondo team, monitoring coordinator of the Spanish Paralympic Committee and member of the Spanish team at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, has been voted the best Murcian coach of 2021. The prize for the best sports management work It is acquired by the Cartagena Football Club, the region’s only team in professional men’s football. It will be picked up by its chairman, Paco Belmonte.

The award for the best team went to the Hozono Global Jairis Alcantarilla, who has just moved up to the Endesa Women’s Basketball League. Daniel Cegarra, world champion cadet bike trial (under 18 years old) and pilot Fermín Aldeguer (sports achievement) will also be awarded today in El Batel.
