Canadawith Alexis Galarneau’s victory over Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (6-3 and 7-6 (5)) in the first round this Saturday, his qualification for Davis Cup Finals to be held in Malaga, while Chile now need a victory for Sweden against Italy on the final day, a match that will take place this Sunday at the usual venue in Bologna (northern Italy).
The reigning champions sealed a 2-1 victory over Chile on Sunday, proving their presence at the José María Martín Carpena Sports Palace and leaving Chile half a foot from the final stage.
Galerneau beat Tabilo with authority in the first match and sealed victory in his doubles match with Vasek Pospisil against the Chilean duo formed by Tabilo himself and Tomás Barrios, in an even match that Chile managed to extend, but in the end finished two sets, with more than the deputy ‘tie-break’ (6-3 and 7-6 (7)).
Before the final doubles duel, Nicolás Jarry easily resolved the confrontation against Canadian Gabriel Diallo, in two sets, with a double 6-4 in just an hour and a half that kept Chile’s hopes alive.
With Canada already classified, there is only one place left to travel to Malaga and, although reduced by the losses of Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini, Italy are best positioned to depend on themselves on Sunday against Sweden, in bottom of the group.
The Italian team, which defeated the Chilean team 3-0, only needs to beat Sweden to ensure its presence in the last eight, regardless of the results of the matches.
Chile, for its part, needs the opposite. In this scenario, a victory for Sweden against Italy would open the doors to qualification. Otherwise, they will play the pre-group phase again in the next edition in 2024.
