With the bronze medal in his pocket, Laura Strong (23 years old) is unhappy with the victory achieved and will be looking this Wednesday (5:15 pm) to fight for gold against local Buse Naz Cakiroglu (25 years old), an important rival who starts out as a favorite, due to his extensive experience and resume. Despite this, the fighter of the Spanish boxing team (-50 kg) relied on the same weapons that allowed him to reach the semifinals of Turkey World Championshipa historic feat for Spanish women’s boxing, as it would be the first World Cup medal for a Spanish boxer.
From the hand of the selector Rafael Lozano, Laura Fuertes thoroughly prepared for the ‘semis’ match against one of the best fighters in the world. Enough to point that out Cakiroglu (32-24), left-handed and with quick reflexes, became champion in Europe Alcobendas (Madrid), world runner-up and Olympic in Tokyo; but Laura showed great strength from the first day she stepped into a ring. Fuertes was one of the first girls to arrive in the Spanish Boxing Federation (FEB) renewed the women’s team in 2017 and the following year she played first European Championship and at the end of 2018 the first World Championship in New Delhi.
IN THE STEPS OF TAMARA GARCIA
Laura Fuertes will be the first Spanish boxer to fight for a World Cup medal, but she is not the first to reach the quarterfinals. Tamara García from Valladolid did this in 2010, in Bridgetown (Barbados). Twelve years ago, the boxer from the Valladolid Boxing Club won her quarterfinal match, but then she was unable to fight for the medal with the best weight at the time, Canadian Mary Spencer.
Now, this Wednesday, Laura Fuertes seeks to continue to progress, with a dream to break Buse Naz Cakiroglu and fight to become world champion.
