Reims surprised Lille with an away win (1-2) that pushed William Still’s team into fifth place, giving them access to play in the next edition of the Europa League.
Almost evenly across the table, the rivalry between both teams is key to marking territory in the noble zone or remaining in no man’s land. Lille, who had already lost the last day’s match with a draw against Rennes (2-2), needed a victory to regain the good feeling.
Just like Reims, who went two games without a win after drawing against Metz (2-2) and losing against Brest (1-2). And, with more urgency than their rivals, Reims took to the field with more determination and with a desire to quickly resolve the rivalry.
In just a quarter of an hour he destroyed all Lille’s expectations, having to collect the ball from the net of his goal on several occasions: first, with Mohammed Daramy’s goal in the 12th minute; and, later, with Keito Nakamura in the 15th. In both, Nyasha Munetsi disguised herself as an assistant to give goals to her teammates.
Lille reacted unsuccessfully in the second half with Samuel Umtiti sidelined with a possible concussion after colliding with an opponent’s head and, although they closed the gap with ten minutes remaining through Benjamin André, they were unable to tie the rivalry and Reims got the three points where they gained momentum towards the continental positions
