Leipzig sacked its sports director before hosting Bayern

Date:

On the eve of facing Bayern Munich on Saturday in the summit match of the sixth day of the Bundesliga, RB Leipzig sacked its sporting director today, Max Eberl, due to the “lack of commitment” at the club. In his place he appointed Rouwen Schröder, who has become part of the board.

Eberl arrived on December 15, 2022 in a position he will now leave, according to RB Leipzig, “regardless of squad changes or sporting results.” The energetic team has won the last two editions of the DFB Pokal and is currently one point behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern.

Eberl has been linked in the German press with Bayern since the sacking of the sporting director at the end of May 2023. Hasan Salihamidzic. However, on Wednesday he reaffirmed that “I have a contract with RB Leipzig.”

He trained and debuted as a player at Bayern

Eberl trained at Bayern as a player (he was a defender) and made his professional debut there in 1991 until he moved to Bochum in 1994.

This summer, Eberl oversaw the transfer market of Leipzig, such as the Hungarian’s multi-million dollar transfer. Dominik Szoboszlai in Liverpool, from Croatian Josko Guardiol to Manchester City, from the French Christopher Nkunku to Chelsea and the Austrian Konrad Laimer in Bayern.

On the other hand, he brought the Belgian to RB Leipzig Lois Openda from RC Lens, to Slovenian Benjamin Sesko (RB Salzburg), in French Castello Lukeba (Lyon), while the Dutch Xavi Simons Paris SG loaned him.
