Veronika Kudermetova defeated second seed Jessica Pegula, 7-5, 6-1 and became the champion of the Toray Pan Pacific Open for the second time in his career. The Russian’s victory in Tokyo ended a streak of four finals losses since his first clay court title in Charlestown in 2021.
It was also his second win over a top-five opponent this week, after defeating second-ranked Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals. Kudermetova, eighth seed, had a brilliant start, with a 3-0 lead after winning ten straight points.
Pegula, who had lost just nine games in three matches before the final, returned to her serve. But the American pulled off a comeback by committing back-to-back double faults and surrendered the first set.
The 26-year-old’s powerful groundstrokes started to come to the fore in the second set, where she broke Pegula twice. to win victory in one hour and 24 minutes.
In the doubles final, Ingrid Neel and Ulrikke Eikeri defeated the Japanese Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya 3-6, 7-5 and 10-5.
