The Spanish David Puig This Sunday he achieved his first success as a professional player by winning the Singapore tournament, on the Asian circuit, held at the Tanah Merah Country Club.
Puig, who normally competes on the Saudi LIV circuit, won from start to finish, despite finishing one stroke over par (73) in the final round. Despite this, the large advantage he accumulated allowed him to seal his first title.
He finished with a total of -19 and a five hit differential over the South Korean Jaewoon Eom and seven compared to the American Andy Ogletree and the thai Poom Saksansin.
Puig had a nine-shot lead at the start of Sunday thanks to his spectacular first three rounds of 64, 66 and 66. No one could doubt his victory. He made a birdie on the par five 8th hole and two bogeys on the 11th and 14th did not tarnish his victory.
“It’s unbelievable,” admitted the Spanish player, who pocketed $360,000 with the victory and became, at 21 years old, the youngest winner of an International Series tournament.
“This is my first year as a professional, but I think I deserved to win maybe two or three months before today. But yes, it’s amazing, it’s the best feeling in the world. That’s why I’ve been training good,” said Puig after his ninth participation in the Asian circuit, where he was in fourth place, while he was second in the order of merit of the International Series.
Puig regularly participated in the LIV circuit, where he played for the Torque GC team, along with the Chileans. Next week he will participate in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) in the last tournament of the regular calendar.
“I had a great opportunity to join LIV after college and I think I took advantage of it and played well this year. But I think I should be here and today I show it,” he noted.
