The ‘bike-broom’ and an accidental as well as the main role

Date:

They are there even if it seems like they are not and their role is important for a test like Skoda Titan Desert Almería without any setbacks. We are talking about two cyclists who complete each stage crossing the finish line in last position. We are talking about two runners whose most important thing is time and their priority is for everyone to reach the finish line before them. We are talking about broom cars. Well, even on Titan They are the ‘bike-broom’.

Iñigo Garaioa and Eloy Escaño They are in charge of ensuring the safety of the participants and ensuring that no one is left behind. If they encounter a runner who needs medical attention, they manage the calls and provide initial support to the cyclist who needs it. And if someone runs out of energy or their legs can’t handle it, they’re the ones who encourage you to continue from behind.

“Every day, the day before, we have a briefing with Manu Tajada (race director) where the changes that may have been explained to us. On the day of the stage, the first one will leave two hours before the opening to verify that the route can be done without problems. Then we almost always separate. One goes to a checkpoint that might be dangerous or whatever and the other stays in the platoon, always in line. In principle, if there is a problem, we help him, but if not, we keep closing the group,” explained Iñigo, who has been the broom for four editions of the Skoda Titan Desert Almería. Eloy, his partner, has debut in 2023.

First aid for those left behind

For many, its role is overlooked. In fact, most people don’t even know they have a career ending behind them. But no doubt once you see them you will be clear about their function. You just have to see the broom they carry along the route.

Most of the time they stop it because of some participant need some kind of mechanical or even medical assistance. “Although the participants have a system to ask for help, if we see that they have a problem, we are the first to help. It’s the same when it comes to mechanical issues because we find people who don’t even know how to fix a puncture.”

Marathon day

Always having to finish the latter has a consequence that is not exactly welcome and that is that the days will last forever. “The first day We were there for 10 and a half hours to complete the stage and this second more or less we spent that time as well.” The key to managing it? “Much patience”.

Something Iñigo also highlighted is that because the latter are often the same, a special bond is formed between these runners.

Moral support above all else

Like everything in life, Titan is an endeavor that for some can be overwhelming, but throwing in the towel is not an option. This is where the tail of the peloton plays another important role: “There are people who want to achieve it, who give everything. Everyone wants the ‘finisher’ stone and everyone manages it in their own way. We are always with them, supporting, encouraging and pushing when necessary.”Iñigo said.
