The climate crisis will have “a dramatic impact” on the Winter Olympics and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) it is estimated that by 2040 there will be only ten countries in a position to organize snow competitions of the program.said this Friday the president of the organization, the German Thomas Bach.
For reasons of sustainability, the IOC only grants the White Games venue to countries that already have all the facilities available or can solve their deficiencies with removable facilities. Currently, only 15 meet these conditions.
“By 2040, open to Olympic terms, two of these fifteen NOCs (national committees) will no longer have the necessary reliability. for the Winter Games to be held in February and five for the Paralympics to be held in March. This means that by 2040 only ten NOCs will be able to host the Games’ snow sports,” Bach said at a press conference in Bombay (India) at the end of the organization’s Executive Commission meeting.
DOUBLE AWARD 2030-2034
“To address this very complex issue appropriately,” the IOC Executive will propose to the 141st Session (assembly) that opens this Saturday “a double hosting concession” was made, for the 2030 and 2034 Winter Games, to have time to focus on the problem of the following editions. This double award will be made in 2024 if talks with interested cities bear fruit.
This week, Japan’s Sapporo withdrew its candidacy for 2030 due to popular rejection of the initiative and after ongoing scandals resulting from the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Last year, an attempt to build a Spanish candidacy around the Pyrenees failed due to political disagreements.
