Some members of International Olympic Committee They asked this Sunday in Mumbai (India) that the president Thomas Bach will remain in office after his second term, which end in 2025, and go on for an unprecedented third. Elected in 2013, Bach must resign in 2025, according to current terms of the Olympic Charter, after a first term of eight years and a second of four. The IOC, however, said it would take up the matter at a future executive board meeting.
Sunday’s open statement by IOC members came after speculation in recent months that Bach would continue as president of one of the most powerful bodies in world sport. So far, no IOC member has announced their intention to run for the top job, although several are considered possible candidates.
The number of terms is limited to avoid long periods like that of the previous president Juan Antonio Samaranchthen in office for 21 years, from 1980 to 2001.
“You showed us the best way to move forward,” he told Bach. Luis Mejía Oviedo, member of the IOC, by nominating him for a third term. “We have to take care of this movement and that is why I propose this option,” he added. Other members also asked Bach to stay and request a Charter change. This will not happen during their meeting in India’s financial capital, as such changes must be proposed in writing and delivered 30 days before an IOC session.
Bach, a German lawyer, declared himself very loyal, but refused to say whether he plans to stay in office and whether he will propose a change in the Laws in the future to make this possible. “You know that I am very loyal to the Olympic Charter. Being one of the main authors of this Olympic Charter pushes me to be even more loyal to that text,” said Bach. “These words of support are not just for me. They are for all of us. What makes us succeed in the challenges we have set for ourselves is this unity,” he added.
The next IOC meeting will be held in Paris before the start of the Olympic Games next July.
The IOC reported that the issue of the presidential mandate will be discussed by the executive board at its next meeting.
