The French conservative senator Valerie Boyer requested this Wednesday to revoke the nationality Karim Benzema if it is confirmed that he has ties to the Islamist group Muslim Brotherhood, as suggested by the Minister of the Interior, Gerard Darmanin.
“If the Interior Minister’s statements are confirmed, we will have to consider sanctions against Karim Benzema. A symbolic punishment is to be the first to withdraw the Ballon d’Or. Then, we have to ask that his nationality be withdrawn,” the legislator said in a statement.
The reaction of the senator from Los Republicanos (LR) came two days after a television interview Darmanin will confirm that the former Real Madrid player has links to that Egyptian-born Islamic group.
“Mr. Benzema has links, everyone knows, it’s well-known, with the Muslim Brotherhood,” Darmanin said Monday night on the Cnews television channel.
Boyer recalled that Benzema has dual French and Algerian nationality. “We cannot accept that a French binational, internationally recognized, disgraces and betrays our country like this”he pointed out.
