Alonso, about the new pieces: “We have some improvements, but…”

Date:

Fernando Alonso did not want to raise expectations and was very cautious ahead of the F1 United States GP when identifying the new components that Aston Martin will introduce to its two cars this weekend at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA).

Aston Martin wants to reverse its situation. It started the year with the second best car on all types of tracks, just behind Red Bull. But the green team showed fewer evolutions than its direct rivals, and those it brought to the track did not have the desired effect and also reduced the power of its car with a change in the behavior of the car. In this way, McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari overtook the Silverstone team on the track in the second half of the course, with the Woking team leading the rest, with better weapons in their pursuit of Red Bull. Because of this, Alonso preferred not to shout about the arrival of new developments at Aston Martin. First, you will need to test them on the American track and compare them to the evolutions that other teams will do and to the performance of others.

“We have some improvements to the car, but … Haas has a new car, Mercedes also has new things … when talking about Aston Martin it seems that others have put the car in a trailer and come to the next race as we improve it. No. Everything is better and always the gain or loss is related to what others are doing too, so we have to see,” commented Fernando Alonso in the run-up to the GP of United States in statements on ‘ DAZN F1’.

In this sense, the rider from Oviedo highlighted the additional difficulty they will bring to bring new things to a weekend that is again, for the second consecutive GP, with a sprint format. This means that on Friday there will be only one free practice session to test the adjustments. From there, the car will go to parc ferme and qualifying will be held on Friday afternoon. Saturday will be an independent day with short qualifying to set up the grid for the subsequent sprint race. And on Sunday, it’s race time.

So, Alonso will only have FP1 to conduct tests, study its innovations, understand them, see how to get better performance from it and understand how to find the key in the car’s settings to find the perfect balance and optimal performance. “We only have one training session and we are focused on optimizing the aerodynamic package,” Alonso said in this regard.

To compensate for this shorter time to carry out tests, Alonso held intense simulator sessions at the Aston Martin factory at the beginning of the week, where he also gave the green company’s workers a motivational talk to keep going for working as hard as possible in pursuit of their goals. , more long-term than short-term.

As revealed by ‘Motorsport’, Aston Martin must show in Austin a new floor and other parts where it wants to improve the performance of the car, where Fernando Alonso suffered a lot in the last races, with many whiplashes and more difficulty in fighting his direct rivals. Alonso already said at the last Italian GP that he is optimistic about what his car can do in the United States because Aston Martin performed well at this track in 2022. With these developments, he could have better weapons than the last races.
