Oliveira’s accident in 2019 weighed on the decision to swap race dates

Date:

In a rare press conference called at the end of the day, the championship’s top sports officials explained the reasons for rewriting the Grand Prix program including changing the dates for the Sprint Race, which will move to Sunday, and the Grand Race. The award will be presented this Saturday “to guarantee the safety of drivers and fans.”

Carlos Ezpeleta, sports director of the championship, explained that “the forecast for Sunday was quite bad for a few days and we waited until now, because the conditions at Phillip Island were very changeable, to make a decision.” Obviously, what happened in 2019’s FP4 weighed in when a gust of wind of 72 km/h threw Miguel Oliveira off the track and caused a heavy fall because “the forecast is almost the same as it was four years ago. The safety of the drivers and the fans is the most important factor for us.

After a meeting with the teams, a “unanimous decision was made to change the dates of the two races because the GP race is the most important. It is clear that we are on top of the forecast for Sunday and if the weather permits we will maintain the rest of the program, the Fans Parade, the Moto2 and Moto3 races with Sprint established and if the planned activities have to be stopped, we will stop them.”

This again necessitated a change of dates for one of the most spectacular Grand Prix of the year due to its unique location and route preferred by the drivers. Ezpeleta pointed out that the provisional 2024 calendar has been published and remains in the third week of October.
