Halep asked CAS to reduce her doping suspension

Date:

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to annul the decision and reduce the four-year ban imposed on him by the International Agency for Tennis Integrity for violating anti-doping rules.

CAS announced on Tuesday the registration of the appeal presented by Halep and the player’s petition.

Halep, 32, tested positive at the 2022 US Open for the banned substance roxadustat, following a urine test during the competition. He also had various irregularities in his Biological Passport, according to the Agency.

Roxadustat is a drug that stimulates the production of EPO and is given to patients with anemia.

Although the tennis player attributed the positive result to the consumption of a “contaminated supplement”, the Agency for Integrity court deemed that “The amount ingested may not yield the concentration of roxadustat found in the sample.”

Halep’s suspension, former world number one, began to count October 7, 2022although all its results since August 29 of that year were annulled.

After initiating the arbitration procedure, the parties will exchange letters and the panel will be established to study the matter. This panel will decide the hearing date, after which it will discuss and issue its arbitration award.

The decision, for which, according to CAS, it is impossible to determine the date today, will be final and binding, except for the right of the parties to file an appeal with the Swiss Federal Court.
