Energy supply – According to report, the EU is well prepared for winter

Date:

The European Union (EU) has significantly reduced its dependence on Russian fossil fuels. This is evident from a report from the European Commission published on Tuesday. According to this data, gas storage facilities will be 98 percent full before next winter.

The EU has reduced its gas needs by more than 18 percent compared to the past five years, she said on Tuesday. Austerity measures and the increased use of renewable energy sources are said to have contributed to this.

However, Austria is still highly dependent on Russian gas. To reduce dependence on Russian gas, the committee had already recommended that the Austrian government diversify energy sources. At the same time, according to the European Commission, Austria is one of the pioneers in the field of renewable energy. However, there is a need to improve, among other things, the duration of the approval process.

Memory filled to 97.7 percent
Domestic gas storage facilities are currently 97.7 percent full. According to the report, energy supplies across the EU should also be well positioned before the coming winter. An energy platform has already organized three rounds of joint gas purchasing. As a result, we are now better prepared for the winter of 2023/24, it was said. The gas storage facilities are more than 98 percent full.

“The past few years have been incredibly challenging for Europe, but we have not wavered from our strong belief that the European Green Deal is the answer to both our energy security and our climate challenges. Going forward, we will also work to eliminate as quickly as possible all fossil fuel subsidies that do not address energy poverty or the just transition,” said new EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra.
