Wage equality in the United States will make way for other countries

The United States this week announced a historic soccer agreement. After long years of struggle, the Federation approved equal pay in which men’s and women’s groups would receive the same, a measure hoped to create a precedent in other countries, including of course Spain.

One of the arguments most heard when comparing salaries or bonuses for goals achieved is that they constitute more than them, but in the case of Americans this has not yet happened, so the comparison offense is truly alarming. What they have been fighting for since 2019 Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan and Hope Soloamong others, is less than an act of justice.

The Wall Street Journal had access to US Soccer’s financial reports and showed that between 2016 and 2018 the Women’s National Team generated $ 50.8 million in ticket sales for matches for 49.9 million men. In fact, in 2016, after winning the World Cup in Canada, women surpassed men by 1.9 million dollars.

According to this newspaper, a player will receive $ 99,000 if he wins 20 games a year, but a soccer player will receive $ 100,000 even if he loses the same number of games he has played.

The difference between what they received and what they received is highlighted also considering the baggage of the titles of each selection. So, the woman won the World Cup four times and the gold medal in Olympic Games among four others and also tops the FIFA world rankings. On the other hand, in the men’s category, the team has hardly won international tournaments and it also has no known numbers that allow it to fill the stadiums. The effect is always, therefore, smaller.

Under the new deal, US Soccer will be “the first federation in the world to match the FIFA World Cup prize money” awarded to teams for participation in World Cups.

“This is a truly historic moment. These deals have forever changed the game here in the United States and have the potential to change the game around the world,” said US Soccer president Ms. Cindy Parlow Cone.
