The Russian Daniel Medvedevworld number 3, defeated Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (7th) on Saturday in the first semi-final 6-4 and 7-6 (8/6) in a decisive and high-level match, and will defend the his title this Sunday at the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna.
In the Austrian capital, Medvedev will also be looking to lift his sixth trophy of the year and the 21st of his career, against his compatriot Andrey Rublev (5th) or the Italian Jannik Sinner (4th), his opponent in the second semifinal.
In the first semi-final, Tsitsipas had the first break points at 2-1. Medvedev saved three, including the third with one of his rare forays into the net.
The Russian then had two more at 3-3. Unlike the Greek, he took advantage of it, winning the second with a forehand that Tsitsipas took too long, and went on to win the first set 6-4, thanks to a service winner on his first chance.
In the second set, although Tsitsipas put up good resistance in a match where he often played serve and volley (30 points won at the net from 39 balls), Medvedev had every opportunity to make difference : Two break points at 3-3, which Tsitsipas saved with a miraculous short forehand cross and a volley; another breaking point at 5-5.
Tsitsipas made two unforced forehand errors in the last two points that gave him the win.
