The German Football Federation has fired the coach of the women’s team Martina Voss-Tecklenburg (55), who remained in his position after the 2023 World Cup failure in Australia, but is on sick leave and is recovering, the DFB announced in a statement on Saturday.
“The DFB and coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg have suspended their joint work with immediate effect. This is the result of the meeting on Friday”, a decision confirmed by the federal authorities “on Saturday during a meeting”, explained of the federation.
Appointed at the end of 2018, Martina Voss-Tecklenburg was extended until Euro 2025, after losing the Euro 2022 final against England at Wembley, in the spring of 2023. In the summer of 2023, the Germans were eliminated in the first round of the World Cup , an unprecedented failure for Mannschaft players.
After reviewing the “disappointing” results of the 2023 World Cup, it emerged that “a new start in sports management is needed for the national team,” the DFB added. “I would like to thank, on behalf of the DFB and on my own behalf, Martina Voss-Tecklenburg for the joint work over the past years,” stressed the president of the federation, Bernd Neuendorg, quoted in the statement.
Remaining in her position after the World Cup, ‘MVT’ returned from Australia “physically and mentally affected,” her husband Hermann Tecklenburg explained to the German press at the beginning of September. Unable to fulfill his role as coach, he was placed on sick leave and then on convalescent leave. The temporary position was taken first by his assistant Britta Carlson at the end of September and then by Horst Hrubesch at the end of October.
In the 2023 Nations League, the only European qualification route for the 2024 Olympic Games, the Germans occupy second place in their group, three points behind Denmark (12 against 9). The two teams will meet on December 1 in Rostock (northern Germany) in a decisive match.
The winner of this group qualifies for the Nations League Final 4 in February 2024, where the top two (or top three if France is in the final) will see the 2024 Olympic Games in France.
